Hard Cover. 8vo Text in Russian with intro and notes in English. Jacket design by Michael Harvey.66 pages clean and tight. With an introduction by Hector Blair and notes by Hector Blair and Militsa Greene, University of Edinburgh. Mikhail Zoshchenko, 1895-1958, was the greatest Soviet humorist. His works give a unique picture of Russian life in the Soviet period-a picture which, though satirically distorted and camouflaged by deliberate ambiguities, presents a shrewd commentary on the times. It was as a recorder of the trivia of everyday life that Zoshchenko excelled. His work was and is enormously popular, though he suffered at the hands of Stalin's cultural hatchet-man, Zhdanov. Most of his books are cast in the traditional form of 'skaz'-firstperson narrative, highly colloquial and personal, making the narrator a colourful medium between the facts and the reader's reaction. Lyudi first appeared in 1924. It is a long short story about the loss of gross illusions, about despair and decay, the struggle for existence, the animal in man. The hero is an emigre of the Tsarist period, who returns to Russia after the Revolution, has his illusions duly shattered, and sinks into a scarcely human existence. He is a parody of two stock figures: `the repentant nobleman' and `the superfluous man'. The language is a splendid mixture of colloquial speech, official jargon, and inflated style. Mr Blair's English introduction `places' Zoshchenko and this story in Soviet literary history. The Russian text follows, with stresses; there are notes on the linguistic difficulties, and a select vocabulary. Advanced students of Russian need to read modern texts in order to become familiar with the modern literary language and with current attitudes. It is essential from the linguistic point of view that nineteenth-century classics should be supplemented in this way; it is equally valuable from the point of view of general knowledge of the present Russian scene. This volume, and the companion, Kira Georgievna are intended as supplements to the reading material at present available for study, with special attention to the needs and difficulties of English-speaking students. ., Cambridge University Press, 1967, Macmillan Education, UK, 1997.
