Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 33 numbered engraved plates at end, including 2 folding and 3 double page. The Society of Arts (now The Royal Society of Arts) was founded in 1754 and was the first organisation in England to promote agriculture and industry by the award of premiums and medals for improvements and inventions. This issue of the Society's Transactions prints articles grouped under the headings of agriculture, chemistry, polite arts, manufactures, mechanics and colonies and trade. They feature, in the agriculture section, a machine for weighing and binding hay, a fruit gatherer, a churn and an account of opium cultivation in Britain. The new art of lithography is well represented by an award to C. Hullmandel and for a portable lithographic press by Alois Senefelder, the pioneer of the process. Other notable inventions include an improved violoncello, a life raft, a counting machine, a less hazardous gunpowder mill, a gas meter and a process for curing British herrings ' in the manner of the Dutch at Lochfine.' An interesting section lists presents to the Society, including books and journals for its library.
