Ce livre étudie les interdits sur le plan taxinomique. Il montre que les interdits sont à la croisée des chemins entre la contrainte et la liberté. Il s'adresse aux spécialistes de plusieurs domaines scientifiques: les sciences sociales et humaines, l'anthropologie, la sociologie, le droit, la psychologie, la psychanalyse, la philosophie... L'homme luba-kasaï est écartelé entre la tradition et la modernité. Il s'attache idéologiquement aux interdits traditionnels. D'une part, il craint la répression des ancêtres qui est automatique, d'autre part, il a peur de la sanction morale et judiciaire. Il fait un choix entre la morale de commandement (la crainte, la contrainte et la peur) et la morale de la liberté et de la responsabilité (engagement et liberté). La peur et la contrainte aliènent l'homme et bloquent son implication pour un développement intégral. Intérioriser les interdits qui purifient, c'est sortir de la contrainte pour adopter une attitude d'engagement et de responsabilité.
