English summary: This monograph analyzes literary representations of fortune and the good life from the perspectives of ethics and hermeneutics of existence. This work examines the arguments of various discourses and conceptions of fortune and the good life (above all the utilitarian pursuit of happiness, care of self, and eudemonia, but also religious, spiritual, and folkish conceptions of fortune or felicity) in English novels within the context of gender differentiation and post-colonialism. In this work, then, fortune appears not as a fixed concept, and instead offers a representation based on hermeneutic practices of narrative, interpretation and evaluation of personal history, which emerge from contingent contexts between events and actions as well as temporary, contingent evaluations of events, experiences, lifestyles, needs, world views, and social structures. In the end, the reader is motivated to create their own evaluation of meaning of literary personal histories. German description: Die Monografie analysiert literarische Darstellungen von Gluck und dem guten Leben aus den Perspektiven der Ethik und Hermeneutik der Existenz. Untersucht werden die Verhandlung unterschiedlicher Diskurse und Konzeptionen von Gluck und dem guten Leben (v.a. des utilitaristischen Glucksstrebens, der Selbstsorge und der Eudamonie, aber auch religioser, spiritueller und folkloristischer Konzeptionen von Gluck) in englischen Romanen im Kontext von Geschlechterdifferenz und Postkolonialismus. Gluck erscheint hierbei nicht als feststehende Konzeption, vielmehr basiert seine Darstellung auf hermeneutischen Praktiken des Erzahlens, Deutens und Bewertens von Lebensgeschichten, die kontingente Sinnzusammenhange zwischen Ereignissen der Handlung sowie vorlaufige, kontingente Bewertungen von Ereignissen, Erfahrungen, Lebensweisen, Bedurfnissen, Weltanschauungen und gesellschaftlichen Strukturen erzeugen und Leser zur eigenen Bewertung und Deutung literarischer Lebensgeschichten anregen.
