German Description: Welche Faktoren konnen erklaren, an welchen Orten welche dialektalen Ausdrucke verwendet werden? Welchen Regeln folgt die geographische Verteilung von sprachlichen Varianten? Diese Arbeit untersucht sprachgeographische Muster und Strukturen auf der Basis empirischer Sprachdaten. Hierzu dient ein umfangreiches Kartenkorpus: der wortgeographische Teil des Sprachatlas von Bayerisch-Schwaben, der die dialektale Variation der Benennungen von mehreren hundert Begriffen dokumentiert. Mit geostatistischen Methoden, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Stochastikern entwickelt wurden, werden diese Daten quantitativ ausgewertet, um den Einfluss von sprachlichen und nicht-sprachlichen Faktoren auf sprachgeographische Verbreitungsmuster zu untersuchen. Dafur wird ein geolinguistisches Variationsmodell eingefuhrt, das das Auftreten sprachlicher Varianten in Abhangigkeit von Wahrscheinlichkeiten beschreibt. So werden nicht nur gangige Annahmen uber sprachgeographische Mechanismen auf den Prufstand gestellt, sondern auch bislang unbekannte Raumstrukturen sichtbar - und dies in einer Detailliertheit und Tiefe, die von den ublichen Verfahren nicht erreicht wird. Die Arbeit wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Forderpreis des Bezirks Schwaben und dem Johann-Andreas-Schmeller-Preis. English Description: What factors can explain which dialectal expressions are employed in which places? What rules do the geographic distribution of linguistic variety follow? This work examines linguo-geographic patterns and structures on the basis of empirical linguistic data. An extensive body of maps serves to explore the word-geographic part of the linguistic atlas of Bavaria-Swabia, of which the dialectal variations of several hundred concepts is documented. This data was quantitatively analyzed with geo-statistical methods developed in concert with stochastic methods in order to investigate the influence of linguistic and non-linguistic factors in the linguo-geographic pattern of distribution.
