Thomas Calberg. On the 19th of June, 1554, there were many people thronging the streets of Torneck, or, as it is now called, Tournay, in Belgium. It had not been a rare thing during the preceding few years ftp Protestants to be seized and led to death; but this spectacle had never lost its charm for the rough Catholic masses. The beadles, at the time of which we are now speaking, were just leading some new offender to prison. It was Thomas Calberg, a native of the town, and an upholsterer by trade. The authorities would have left him unmolested, on account of his work, for he was a skillful mechanic, but they could not forgive him for laboring for the kingdom of God. The little work consisted of a few beautiful psalms, out of the Geneva Psalm Book, from which the Protestant congregation to which he belonged were in the habit of singing at their service. The twct found its way among his fellow-workmen, and he was discovered to be the author of it.
