New York - G P Putman's Sons, 1910 Book. Good. Hardcover. An uncommon 1910 edition ofSterne'sthird and final novel,lavishly illustrated with full-colour plates by Everard Hopkins. Laurence Sterne (24 November 1713 18 March 1768) was a novelist and an Anglican clergyman. He is best known for his novels The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy; but he also published many sermons, wrote memoirs, and was involved in local politics. A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italywas written and first published in 1768, as Sterne was facing death. In 1765,he travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning determined to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view. The novel can be seen as an epilogue to the possibly unfinished work The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. The frontispiece is missing,but the eleven remaining tissue-guarded colour plates are present, tipped-in on attractive grey paper. With intriguing copperplate ink inscription to front free endpaper, Louis Sterne, in remembrance of a very pleasant friendship. Xmas, Sidmouth, 1916. Condition: In a hardback cloth binding with gilt titling and illustration to front board. Externally, generally sound with marks and slight wear to boards. Some bumping to head and tail of spine. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally, binding loosening slightly in places. Generally bright with foxing to endpapers. Overall: GOOD., New York - G P Putman's Sons, 1910, E. Sturdily rebound in green library buckram, top edge gilt, gilt spine titles, 8vo, 22 cm,. 387, [1] pp. With an introductory memoir of Lord Chesterfield (pp 1-72). The remainder of the text prints letters dated between 1656 (when Stanhope succeeded to hies Earldom) and 1712 taken from a manuscript volume of Lord Chesterfield found in the library at Bath House, about 1810. Sir Philip Stanhope's first marriage was to Lady Anne Percy, daughter of the Earl of Northumberland. Following her death, a marriage had been arranged between him and Mary, daughter of the 3rd Lord Fairfax, but she jilted him and Chesterfield subsequently married Elizabeth Butler, daughter of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde and his wife, Elizabeth. Following his second wife's death in 1665, Chesterfield married again to Lady Elizabeth Dormer, with whom he had two sons. An ex-library copy bound in green library buckram. Library label on front pastedown endpaper with withdrawn stamp, library stamps also on the front free endpaper, title-page and occasional margins.
