“Masks” is a photographic poem and exploration into the nature of identity. The story takes place inside the psyche of a girl named Sara. Sara sees pieces of the past lives of others and memories of her own as she follows a phantom killer and his victims through a distorted reality. “Masks began as an exercise in sequential storytelling using only visuals, mainly photography and digital painting. When I decided to actually letter Masks I felt the writing needed to be just as unique as its visual style. What I came up with was more of a graphic poem than a graphic novel. On the surface “Masks” is a dark psychological thriller that follows a girl named Sara who’s thoughts and memories are not always her own. Masks is a non linear story and is meant to be left open to interpretation, so I won’t elaborate and spoil that aspect of it. My intention with Masks was to make something highly original that I had never seen done in comics before and a book the reader would want to open up more than just once.
