Good with scattered underlining in ink to first 93 pp. Originally published 1942, but editor Hemenway's lengthy (39-page) introduction is revelatory, as he asserts: "'Dust Tracks' was considerably altered during editing to remove Hurston's criticism of Western imperialism in Asia" -- sections restored in this edition. He also notes the autobiography "all but ignores Hurston's success as a novelist," though it was that success that paved the way for "Dust Tracks." Huston refuses to reveal her birth date (it was actually 1891, not the usually cited 1901, meaning she entered high school at 26 and college at 34, after a "lost decade"), omits mention of her second marriage, and refuses to name her first husband. "Modern readers should know that 'Dust Tracks' sacrifices truth for the politics of racial harmony," Hemenway continues. She writes "I have no lurid tales to tell of race discrimination at Barnard," yet in fact her private letters reveal that her classmates laughed at her recitations, and that she was ordered by her benefactor, the college's founder, Mrs. Annie Nathan Meyer, not to attend the Barnard Prom at the Ritz Hotel because that white lady "found the idea unseemly," while Hurston's friend, mentor, and employer during the Barnard Years, the novelist Fannie Hurst, would have "exotic fun" by making reservations at a swank hotel (where, one presumes, African-Americans would not normally have been welcome) for herself and "Princess Zora . . . parading me in there all dressed up as an Asiatic person of royal blood and keeping a straight face while the attendants goggled at me and bowed low."
