El emperador de Arabia quiere construir un jardín magnífico para que el esplendor de su reinado sea recordado siempre. Para llevar a cabo esta obra contrata al mejor arquitecto de su tiempo: Iskandar, y no repara en gastos: compra las materias primas más lujosas y promete una vida de esplendor y riquezas al artista cuando termine su obra. Pero Zoz, un adivino turco, advierte al emperador de que no logrará sus propósitos: el recordado será Iskandar y el emperador Al-Iksir caerá en el olvido. Para que no se cumpla la profecía, el mandatario planea encerrar al arquitecto al término de su trabajo con la excusa de haber intentado asesinarlo. Dalhabad, el poeta, va a intentar impedirlo, y finalmente logra hablar con el artista una vez que su encierro ya es un hecho; así sabrá que a pesar de la cautividad el arte de Iskandar se sigue difundiendo por todo el mundo, y que obras concebidas por él y más grandiosas que la proyectada para el emperador se construyen en otros países. Al-Iksir acepta su derrota, y morirá en el olvido mientras que el nombre de Iskandar será recordado por los siglos de los siglos.
