The volume offers contributions from social sciences that focus on the complex relationship between collective identity and citizenship on the one hand and the welfare state on the other hand. It includes new theoretical insights as well as empirical studies with a focus on one country or cross-country comparisons. The authors are particularly interested in questions regarding the relationships between national identity and types of citizenship, citizenship and welfare (welfare citizenship), immigration and welfare, perceptions of deservingness, conditionality of solidarity, discursive foundations of welfare structures, (welfare) nationalism. The chapters proceed in accordance with different methods of analysis (such as the institutional approach, actor-centered framework or discourse analysis). The volume assembles contributions of renowned academics from several countries such as Canada, Denmark, Germany Ireland, Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland. They offer two major perspectives on the subject at hand, comprising the national framework of analysis of identity, citizenship and welfare as well as the international perspective drawing, among other things, on the current trends of globalization and Europeanization.
