Im Jahr 1925 verfasst Moholy-Nagy seinen Essay »Malerei, Fotografie, Film«, der ein Meilenstein für sein Schaffen wird. Darin entwickelt er eine ästhetische Theorie des Lichts, die er auf Malerei, Fotografie und Film, aber auch Bühnengestaltung und Design anwendet. Licht wird zum Fundament für sein praktisches und theoretisches Wirken. Kunst erhält nur dann Sinn und Bedeutung, wenn sie Licht reflektiert. Seine Entwicklung als Maler bezeichnet der Künstler als Verlagerung vom »Malen von Transparenz« zu einem Malen, das frei ist von jeglichem darstellerischen Zwang und die Möglichkeit eröffnet, »nicht mit Farben, sondern mit Licht« zu malen. Diese Theorie entfaltet ihre maximale Bedeutung in Fotografie und Film. Moholy-Nagy erfindet das »Fotogramm«, eine reine Lichtgraphik, und sieht die Fotografie als völlig autonomes Mittel, dessen Potenzial erst noch zu entdecken ist. In der konsequenten Umsetzung dieser These entsteht eine wahre Flut fotografischer, szenographischer, kinetischer und filmischer Produktionen. Gleichermaßen Theoretiker wie Praktiker, wollte Moholy-Nagy immer ein ganzheitlicher Künstler sein. Dieser Band präsentiert ihn in beiden Aspekten und räumt seinen fotografischen und filmischen Werken sowie der nichtgegenständlichen oder »reinen« Malerei breiten Raum ein.
