As a first step, information on these countries was reviewed in the IUCN Environmental Law Center in Bonn. A letter was sent through diplomatic channels to both the foreign ministries and embassies of 102 countries, requesting data about the status of the environment in each nation, for updating our material. German embassies in those countries were also a great help in providing information. A general format for presenting this data was adopted in order to achieve a certain conformity in our compilation. Information received was duly entered onto these format sheets, which were then sent to the concerned embassies and national departments, along with the request that authorities check, amend or complete the included data. The request indicated on the one hand that we hoped that they would take the responsability for amending the information since they were in a better position than the authors to insure the validity of the survey. On the other hand we pointed out that their silence would be interpreted as their having no objections to the data provided. This book represents the final result of all this work and contains information on 63 countries, chosen because the authors felt that there was enough data on their environmental policies to warrant publication. It is our hope to further develop this work, and to that end would appreciate hearing on any inaccuracies, mistakes or omissions contained herein. - - -., Books<
