Paperback / softback. New. This is a comprehensive workbook for actors, covering the key characteristics and profiles of a wide range of African accents of English. Its unique approach not only addresses the methods and processes by which to go about learning an accent, but also looks in detail at each example. This lets the reader plot their own route through the learning process and tailor not only their working methods but also their own personal idiolect. Full breakdowns of each accent cover: an introduction giving a brief history of the accent, its ethnic background, and its language of origin preparatory warm-up exercises specific to each accent a directory of research materials including documentaries, plays, films and online resources key characteristics such as melody, stress, pace and pitch descriptions of physical articulation in the tongue, lips, jaw, palate and pharynx practice sentences, phoneme tables and worksheets for solo study. African Accents is accompanied by a website at www.routledge.com/cw/mcguire with an extensive online database of audio samples for each accent. The book and audio resources guide actors to develop their own authentic accents, rather than simply to mimic native speakers. This process allows the actor to personalize an accent, and to integrate it into the creation of character rather than to play the accent on top of character., 6, New. Sir James Caird's English Agriculture in 1850-51 is without doubt the most important single source for the study of mid-19th century agrarian conditions, as it was also the major work of this greatest of contemporary agricultural writers. Indeed, it was this book which established Caird's reputation as the leading authority of his day, and made such an impression that it was published also in the United States and was translated into French, German and Swedish. In English agriculture of the reader will find a comprehensive and penetrating survey of English farming and its prospects under the newly introduced regime of free trade. The work is essential for an understanding of the meaning and methods of high farming and it remains the best account of the achievements and failings of English agriculture in its heyday. 'Caird was in the tradition of the great commentators on English farming.' G.E.Mingay writes in his new introduction. Fussell is a thorough examination of the role played by the English dairy farmer over the past 400 years. Beginning his study with the cow, he gives an account of the improved breeding and feeding methods that make todays cow a totally different beast to that of the Tudor farmer. A chapter is devoted to the cultivation of fodder crops and another to the comfort of the cow for, as the author states, pleasant conditions are an important factor in encouraging its productivity. The dairy industry, no less than any other in the 19th century, was the scene of numerous devices and inventions designed to improve milking methods. This, together with the development of the sale of milk in liquid form, is discussed in later chapters. The practical difficulties of transporting milk had until about 1850 caused the major part of the milk produced to be turned into butter and cheese and the varying products of differing regions are fully described. Towards the end of 19 century, however, the number of dairies prepared to retail milk grew in number to accommodate an ever-increasing rate of milk consumption. Numerous farming textbooks published during the period and contemporary descriptions of the farming scene form the background for this scholarly appraisal. No other book has treated the English dairy Farmer in such detail, and in drawing upon a such a wealth of illustrative material to support his conclusions, G. E. Fussell has produced a work, which will be valued by all agricultural historians. 357pp inclusive of index and bibliography. A LOVELY COPY! After a distinguished military career, he had two long periods of office in Ceylon, from 1805 to 1811, and from 1813 until his death death in 1824 he acted as governor of Malta, and then of the Ionian Islands, where he made a lasting reputation for his vigour and honesty, as well as for his autocratic methods of administration, which brought him to be popularly regarded as a tyrant. This work, first published in 1939, describes many of the more colorful episodes in his career, while, in its account of his role as governor, it makes a valuable contribution to the study of early colonial history. "King Tom" Maitland was perhaps the ablest, and certainly the most picturesque of British Proconsuls in the Napoleonic age, and a well-documented survey of his activities in the Far East and the Mediterranean was needed for a better understanding of imperial expansion in that period. She received her D.Phil. in social anthropology from Oxford University and has taught at Durham University in England for four years, at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN for 19 years and at Georgia State University for four years. She has conducted research on American Roma since 1968, on economic development and national identity in Belize since 1972 and recently on identity and culture in Texas. In all three cases, the focus of the work has been to understand how and why people create and maintain identity and culture. The author spent two years in close, continuous contact with a community of Rom Gypsies living in Barvale, California. Overcoming the secrecy, suspicion, and deception with which the Rom commonly treat all non-Gypsies, the author has produced an in-depth look at the full range of everyday social life among the Roma. The Gypsies portrayed in this book are the Vlax-speaking Rom, the largest group of Gypsies in the United States, numbering 500,000. Not officially recognized as a minority in the U.S. until 1972, Gypsies have led an almost entirely invisible existence here. Now in this fascinating work--the first complete account of American Gypsies--Sutherland has produced an in-depth look at the full range of everyday social life among the Rom. Separate, elusive, complex, and unique among the people of the world, Gypsies have preserved their traditional way of life. How have they avoided assimilation? What keeps them apart? How are they organized, and what do they believe? These and other important questions about these hidden Americans are addressed in Sutherland's contemporary study. America has always been a land of fascinating cultural diversity. From the extremely wide range of cultural groups on the American scene today, Gypsies, or Roma, are among the most extraordinarily elusive and complex. For more than forty-five years, social scientist Anne Sutherland has researched and objectively written about the American Roma worldview. She honed traditional research methods to study the Roma, who normally obscure the truth about themselves to outsiders, dispelling centuries of misinterpretation, bias, and romanticism that have led to discrimination. In this latest work, Roma: Modern American Gypsies, she succinctly portrays their twenty-first-century lives and identifies how their realities have been shaped by global processes and agents of power. Throughout complex stages of change and adaptation, Sutherland concludes, Gypsies have managed to retain, not lose, their identity. The Romani (also spelled Romany), colloquially known as Roma, are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group, traditionally itinerant, living mostly in Europe and the Americas. The Romani originate from the northern Indian subcontinent, from the Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab regions of modern-day India. Genetic findings appear to confirm that the Romani "came from a single group that left northwestern India" in about 512 AD. Genetic research published in the European Journal of Human Genetics "revealed that over 70% of males belong to a single lineage that appears unique to the Roma". They are dispersed, but their most concentrated populations are located in Europe, especially Central, Eastern and Southern Europe (including Turkey, Spain and Southern France). The Romani arrived in Mid-West Asia and Europe around 1007. They have been associated with another Indo-Aryan group, the Dom people: the two groups have been said to have separated from each other or, at least, to share a similar history. Specifically, the ancestors of both the Romani and the Dom left North India sometime between the 6th and 11th century. The Romani are widely known in English by the exonym Gypsies (or Gipsies), which is considered by some Roma people to be pejorative due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity. Beginning in 1888, the Gypsy Lore Society started to publish a journal that was meant to dispel rumors about their lifestyle. Since the 19th century, some Romani have also migrated to the Americas. There are an estimated one million Roma in the United States; and 800,000 in Brazil, most of whose ancestors emigrated in the 19th century from Eastern Europe. Brazil also includes a notable Romani community descended from people deported by the Portuguese Empire during the Portuguese Inquisition.[70] In migrations since the late 19th century, Romani have also moved to other countries in South America and to Canada. In February 2016, during the International Roma Conference, the Indian Minister of External Affairs stated that the people of the Roma community were children of India. The conference ended with a recommendation to the government of India to recognize the Roma community spread across 30 countries as a part of the Indian diaspora. The Romani language is divided into several dialects which together have an estimated number of speakers of more than two million. The total number of Romani people is at least twice as high (several times as high according to high estimates). Many Romani are native speakers of the dominant language in their country of residence or of mixed languages combining the dominant language with a dialect of Romani; those varieties are sometimes called Para-Romani., The Free Press, 1975, 2.75, New York 1986. Revolutionary when they were completed in 1939, the Johnson Wax Buildings in Racine, Wisconsin--designed by Frank Lloyd Wright--remain popular tourist sites even today. The large Administration Building, housing the company's main offices, was structurally unique for its use of unrestricted space and its dendriform (treelike) columns. A second building, the totally enclosed Research Tower, had rounded corners and was constructed of brick and glass, with the glass in the shape of tubing rather than panes. Jonathan Lipman's comprehensive book--a thoroughly researched study of the design and construction of this radical, inspiring workplace--draws on much unpublished archival material to reveal, in detail, Wright's design process. From commissioning through design development, construction, innovations, and furnishings, to the genesis of the Research Tower and its construction and completion, the book presents a wealth of information. Insights into Wright's methods of dealing with his clients will be of special interest to devotees of the noted architect. (The Johnson Wax executives were awed by Wright and conscious of his genius, but feared, at times, that the protracted design and construction process would send them either to the poorhouse or to the madhouse.) Well-written, with excellent illustrations and plans, this book will appeal to anyone interested in architectural history and architecture., English, Year1986, Illust. B/W163, Illust. Very good. viii, [2], 570. [4] pages. Occasional footnotes. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Minor soiling. George Robert Acworth Conquest (15 July 1917 - 3 August 2015) was an English-American historian. Conquest was noted for his works on Soviet history including The Great Terror: Stalin's Purges of the 1930s (1968). In 1948 Conquest joined the Foreign Office's Information Research Department (IRD), a "propaganda counter-offensive" unit. In 1956, Conquest became writer and historian. In 1968, Conquest published his best-known work, The Great Terror: Stalin's Purge of the Thirties, the first comprehensive research of the Great Purge, which took place in the Soviet Union between 1934 and 1939. The book was based mainly on information which had been made public, either officially or by individuals, during the so-called "Khrushchev Thaw" in the period 1956-64. It also drew on accounts by Russian and Ukrainian émigrés and exiles dating back to the 1930s, and on an analysis of official Soviet documents such as the Soviet census. The most important aspect was that it widened the understanding of the purges beyond the previous focus on the "Moscow trials" of disgraced Communist Party leaders such as Bukharin and Zinoviev. When Conquest wrote the original volume, he relied heavily on unofficial sources. With the advent of glasnost, an avalanche of new material became available, and Conquest mined this enormous cache to write, in 1990, a substantially new edition of his classic work, adding enormously to the detail. Conquest blends profound research with evocative prose, providing not only an authoritative account of Stalin's purges, but also a compelling and eloquent chronicle of one of this century's most tragic events. He provides gripping accounts of everything from the three great "Moscow Trials," to methods of obtaining confessions, the purge of writers and other members of the intelligentsia, life in the labor camps, and many other key matters. In the light of further archival releases, and new material published in Moscow and elsewhere, it remains remarkable how many of Conquest's most disturbing conclusions have continued to bear up. This volume rounds out the picture of this huge historical tragedy, further establishing the book as the key study of one of the twentieth century's most lethal, and longest-misunderstood, offenses against humanity., Oxford University Press, 1990, 3, No Dust JacketBook:Minor shelf wear on board surfaces. HARDBACK., Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1968, 4, London England: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1967. This new work by G. E. HARDBACK., Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1967, 3, London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1968. 1968 New Impression of 1939 1st Edition...Sir Thomas Maitland, was one of the most important figures in the formative period of the colonial administrative service during and immediately after the Napoleonic wars. Very good. viii, [2], 570.
