First edition of this scarce automobile travel map guide to Oregon for travelers and businessmen. Supplied with an extended index, the strip maps all offer auto roads and stage roads for buses, as well as showing railroad lines. In addition, ferries, post offices, Western Union Express Offices, and much more are shown. In addition there are mileage maps for Washington & Oregon included as well. Gilham (1882-1949) was a lifetime Portland, OR resident who published gravel guides and histories on the Pacific Northwest, but after losing his business during the Great Depression went to work for the Jones Lumber Co., Gilhams Guide, 1930., 0, Portland, OR: Northwest School of Photography, Boyd Printing Co., 8730 SE Woodstock, Ave., [1948]. 8vo. Colour-printed softcovers, pictorial map on front cover, mailing label on back (light uniform toning, minor shelfwear), still VG copy. First edition, of this very rare photographic souvenir issued by photo students at the Northwest School of Photography after May 30, 1948 when the Columbia River flood waters destroyed Vanport. Vanport was the largest public housing project in the United States built for workers in Kaiser shipyards during World War II, and due to racist Oregon state housing restrictions a significant majority of the shipyards African-American workforce was confined to the housing destroyed by the flood in 1948. The well-annotated photographs chronicle the devastation, rubble, commercial signs and telephone poles emerging from the flood waters, and buses loading with evacuees, aerial shots, victims standing on roofs, the flooded Kaiser shipyards, along with images of flooded Camas, WA and Woodland, WA.
