Side by side with modern indifferentism stands a widespread and increasing amount of materialism and scepticism, the natural outcome of material progress and the existing unsettled state of religious views. As was observed in the last chapter, some of this must be ascribed to modern liberality of thought in the religious world. The lower classes of literal and sensual minds have gladly availed themselves of the opportunity of throwing off the yoke of spiritual truth altogether, and stand revealed as men-animals governed by natural appetites and desires; and who, but for the powerful influences of Religion and the prevailing generally elevated tone of society, would gradually gravitate back to low sensualism. These, however, are not the individuals who make a mark of any kind in society, or who exert any appreciable influence on civilization, but form the residuum resulting from the modern human diseases of naturalism, sensualism, and materialism. But above this lowest class there are those whoseconvictions, partly from causes already alluded to, and partly from the insincerity and corruptions of the ministry, have laid aside Religion and the Bible as false and unsatisfactory, and adopted atheism or agnosticism as their faith-a negative faith, truly-and in many instances, we believe, only adopted because no satisfactory system of religious truth has ever been presented to them.
