The majority of these are "invisible homeless," who keep up their appearance so they can use public buildings and look for jobs. In fact, 20% of the homeless have full or part-time jobs and an additional 50% are actively looking for work. It is estimated that 30% of the homeless are families with children. These findings are based on three empirical research studies of the homeless problem in Los Angeles County (designated by HUD to be a homeless capitol of America), legal declarations of homeless persons, and research findings of studies conducted in major cities and by various government agencies. Photographs of various aspects of homelessness are also presented. The reader is provided with a historical account of homelessness since the end of the American Civil War and an examination of the historical and social structural factors which are believed to have given rise to the new urban homeless of the 1980s. A sociological model using the concepts of disaffiliation and displacement is offered to theoretically explain homelessness and a typology of the homeless is developed.
