AMELIA EARHART - A Biography - hardcover

1990, ISBN: 9780874748369

ID: 553933051

Smithsonian Inst. Press , Washington D.C., 1990. 2nd US printing, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, VG/VG CONDITION ( slight scuff on several pages on right side & light wear to bottom dj eadge), 322 pages . illus., notes, bibliog., index. ------------------------------ She died mysteriously before she was 40. Yet in the last decade of her life, Amelia Earhart soared from obscurity to fame as the best-known female aviator in the world. She set record after record: the first woman to fly the Atlantic (both with others and solo), the first person to fly solo from Honolulu to Oakland, and the first to make a nonstop, solo flight from Mexico City to Newark. But she couldn't earn a living as a pilot until she was thirty, when she agreed to risk her life on a flight promoted by a brash publicist, her husband-to-be George Palmer Putnam. Raised in Atchison, Kansas, in a world of inherited wealth and Victorian morality, she spent most of her teens in poverty as her charming, alcoholic father moved from one job to another. Taking flight lessons whenever she could scrape time and money together, Earhart was a three-time college dropout. She worked as a nurses' aide, file clerk, truck driver, photographer, teacher, and social worker before finally bursting onto the world scene with her historic Atlantic crossing in 1928. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------That flight launched Earhart on a dual career as a fighter for women's rights and a tireless crusader—perhaps the most effective activist of her time—for commercial air travel. An intensely private person, she conquered her deep aversion for publicity and crowds to become a gifted speaker and consummate fundraiser. Cofounder of one of the first commercial airlines, Boston and Maine Airways, she promoted it by personal appearances flight hostess and ticket seller. She designed the first lightweight air luggage and clothing so classic it is still fashionable today. A pacifist, Earhart advocated the military draft for women if there were to be a draft at all. Because Franklin D. Roosevelt effectively supported women's rights, she campaigned for him although she was a member of the opposition National Women's Party. ------------------------------------------------------------------------Doris Rich's exhaustively researched biography downplays the sensational "What Happened to Amelia Earhart?" myth by disclosing who Amelia Earhart really was—a woman of three centuries, born in the 19th, pioneering in the 20th, and advocating ideals and dreams relevant to the 21st. Her last dream, a flight around the world, caused her death. But she died as she had lived, courageously and impetuously pursuing a dangerous goal with awesome intensity.
