Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The accounts of the reigns of Constantius II, Julian, Jovian, Valentinian I, Valens, and Gratian by Ammianus, the last great Roman historian and a spokesman for traditional civilized values, illuminate both the attitudes of his time and his own personal beliefs. In this study Seager offers the first comprehensive analysis of the language employed by Ammianus to expound the major themes of his history. -- Seager closely examines the language Ammianus used to praise moderation and condemn excess, with the rhetorical and metaphorical devices traditional to those themes. He considers language that signals Ammi-anus?s opinions of caution, prudence, and sobriety, which proves less significant than has been thought, as well as Ammianus?s disapproval of sedition and public disorder. The vocabulary used by Ammianus reflects his extremist approval of imperial dignity in preference to the less godlike accessibility praised by other historians. -- Attention is given to the occurrence or nonoccurrence of the same linguistic phenomena in works by contemporary Latin prose authors, writers whose interests might be expected to overlap those of Ammianus. In particular, the style of Tacitus, whose history of imperial Rome stood as a model for Ammianus, serves as a comparison. The most striking conclusion of the study is that such terms as ?fourth-century usage? and ?fourthcentury beliefs? mislead by glossing over the wide variety of individual opinion on most major issues.
