The approach is ethological and much reference is made to detailed description of behaviour and to biological function, although there is extensive reference to physiology, brain mechanisms and relevant psychological research. Ideas from sociobiology, motivation and learning studies are emphasised. There is, therefore, very broad coverage of the role of behaviour in all aspects of life. Another novel feature is the extensive reference to applied aspects of behaviour, particularly its importance to the production of farm animals and the control of agricultural and medical pests.
