Christopher Wood, an acknowledged expert in the area of Victorian painting, has written this book to make more available Victorian artists’ impressions of the English countryside. This little-appreciated source of information throws a light on landscapes, flora and fauna that have since disappeared, been irreversibly changed or are currently under threat. Relatively few artists were prepared to address the lives of rural and urban Victorian workers in a realistic manner since this did not chime with the preferences of contemporary patrons and collectors. Many farmyard and cottage scenes show a level of cleanliness and tidiness that makes the mind boggle [but not 'A Cottage Fireside', 1850, by Frederick Daniel Hardy]. As a result, Victorian paintings have to be viewed with an analytical eye and an awareness of the often-disturbing realities of the period. In this large book, Wood introduces his topic in an essay ‘Victorian Art and the Countryside’ after which he considers different motifs in a series of illustrated chapters: ‘A Green and Pleasant Land’, ‘The Farm’, ‘Work’, ‘Horses’, ‘Haymaking and Harvesting’, ‘The Village’, ‘Leaving Home’, ‘Village Visitors’, ‘The Cottage’, ‘The Cottage Garden’, ‘Childhood’, ‘The Squire’, ‘Sport’, ‘Love and Marriage’ and ‘the Village Church’. There is a List of Illustrations including dates, a Select Bibliography and an Index. There are 192 colour illustrations, presented as full- or half-page plates, many for the first time.
